Drug Addiction

While not everyone who uses drugs becomes addicted, many people do. Drug addiction involves compulsively seeking to use a substance, regardless of the potentially negative social, psychological and physical consequences. Certain drugs are more likely to cause physical dependence than are others.

Addiction is defined as uncontrollable, compulsive drug craving, seeking and use even in the face of negative health and social consequences. Very few people are able to return to occasional use after becoming addicted.

Addiction is fundamentally about compulsive behavior. It is of paramount importance to know that such habits may begin with conscious choices but its maintenance originate outside of consciousness (i.e. from the unconscious mind). It is actually a compulsive sequence of behaviors that are so practiced that they can be extremely difficult to avoid initiating, and even harder to interrupt. An important thing that is often ignored is that people with addictions often have other psychiatric problems which predispose them to falling prey to a chemical escape from the realities of life.

Addiction is characterized by frequent relapse, and that one should not expect to overcome addiction on the first try. Doctors treating addiction need to know that ‘come back when you're motivated’ is an inappropriate approach to addiction. Individuals have very specific problems, and so it is important to find ways to engage the addicted individual. Doctors should apply as broad an approach to the individual as possible. This means combining various rejuvenating approaches, including prescription drugs, family therapy, social and legal support, providing accommodations, and more.

Drug addiction has a complex socio-cultural network that is peculiar to each addict and it is necessary to understand that to break this vicious cycle one not only needs an empathetic staunch friend or family but also a highly trained physician capable of deaddicting the addict and often requires help from the law enforcement authorities to help protect the addict from being victimised again.

The importance of patience and persistence in practicing new behaviors over long periods of time cannot be overemphasized.
